Emily Thomas
Director, London
Emily is a director of TheJudge Group and head of the Manchester office, with over a decade of specialist experience in litigation insurance and funding. An English-qualified solicitor, Emily brings a unique perspective to litigation risk management, shaped by her background in private practice, insurance underwriting, and litigation fund portfolio management.
Since joining TheJudge in 2017, Emily has advised leading law firms, litigation funders, insolvency practitioners and corporates on tailored risk transfer solutions for high-stakes litigation and arbitration. She is particularly experienced in designing multi-layered insurance programmes and structuring policies for complex, contingent exposures.
Emily’s expertise includes after-the-event (ATE) insurance, portfolio and capital protection cover, insurance for cross-undertakings in damages, and innovative uses of litigation insurance to support Damages-Based Agreements (DBAs). She regularly works with firms to help de-risk fee arrangements, preserve investment capital, and navigate the challenges of litigation finance with greater certainty.
Emily is widely respected for her technical knowledge and strategic insight. In 2024, she was instrumental in brokering a series of rare cross-undertaking in damages insurance placements and a substantial number of capital protection policies supporting litigation funders and investors.
She is a regular contributor to legal publications and a recognised authority on the evolving role of insurance in litigation finance.
