James is a co-founder and director of TheJudge Group, where he has been instrumental in building the company into a leading global litigation insurance brokerage. With over 25 years of experience exclusively in litigation finance and risk transfer, James is recognised as one of the industry’s most experienced and respected figures.
Based in London, James advises clients on high-value, complex litigation and arbitration funding and insurance solutions. He has an exceptional track record of working with Global 100 law firms, litigation funders, and corporate clients, often in matters involving hundreds of millions – and in some cases billions – in dispute.
James is particularly renowned for his expertise in structuring bespoke solutions for international arbitration and investment treaty claims. He has led some of the largest-ever insurance placements in the market, including multi-insurer co-syndications for legal budgets exceeding £40m, and litigation funding syndications surpassing $100m.
He advises clients on the full range of litigation finance instruments – from legal budget funding and working capital arrangements, to award monetisation and capital protection. His approach is highly strategic and collaborative, with a focus on finding tailored, commercial solutions to complex problems.
James’ deep sector knowledge is underpinned by his earlier career as a senior underwriter for a specialist litigation insurer, where his risk selection produced a record-breaking underwriting year. That unique experience – across underwriting, broking, and fund management – enables James to approach each client mandate with a 360-degree view of the risk landscape.
In 2025, James was named one of the Lawdragon 100 Global Leaders in Litigation Finance. He has provided expert testimony in landmark cases on litigation insurance and funding and is regularly quoted in leading legal and financial publications, including the Financial Times, The Times, The Lawyer, and Global Arbitration Review.
